The Vine Whisperer

Garett Westcott grew up sitting on his father's lap on the tractor on the family farm. Today he works the same land on his own terms: quietly, methodically, and with a reverence for living soil that has transformed two vineyards from the ground up.

The Making of a Vine Whisperer

Born on the Tractor. Built for the Vine.

Long before he ever pruned a vine, Garett Westcott understood land. Growing up on the family farm, literally sitting on his father Grant's lap on the tractor, the rhythms of soil and season were the first language he learned.

When Grant and Carolyn made the leap to Niagara in 2008, Garett came with them. He planted the original vines alongside them, learning the hard early lessons of Canadian wine country under one of the most respected consultants in viticulture: Alain Sutre of Bordeaux, who helped shape Westcott's approach to the land from the very beginning.

"Mother Nature was also a stern teacher, and she insisted on honesty. The vines always know if you are cutting corners."

The Westcott Method

A Vineyard Alive
in Every Sense

Regenerative Viticulture · Niagara Escarpment

Live Cover Crops No Cultivation Natural Manure No Pesticides No Herbicides Minimal Fungicides Vine Balance Full Biodiversity

Garett's strategy for Westcott Vineyards mirrors that of the finest estates in the world: a holistic, regenerative approach where the vineyard is treated as a living ecosystem, not a production unit.

Live cover crops between every row. No cultivation of the soil. Natural manure fertilization. Zero pesticides or herbicides. Minimal fungicides applied only where strictly necessary. Crop loads painstakingly managed against vine balance and health, not against yield targets.

🌾
Live Cover Crops
Every row hosts living plants that feed the soil biome, fix nitrogen, and support biodiversity year-round.
🚫
No Cultivation
The soil is never tilled. Undisturbed earth builds complex fungal networks that nourish the vine naturally.
🐄
Natural Fertilization
Natural manure replaces synthetic inputs, feeding a vibrant and diverse underground biome from the roots up.
⚖️
Vine Balance
Crop loads are calibrated to each vine's health and energy, sub-Grand Cru thinking applied in Niagara soil.

Two Vineyards. Two Transformations.

From Exhausted Land to Living Terroir

Garett inherited two vineyards bearing the marks of conventional farming. What followed was a patient, disciplined process of restoration: the kind of work that shows up first in the soil, then in the vine, and finally, unmistakably, in the glass.

Home Farm · Vinemount Ridge
The Original Vineyard
26 Acres · Pinot Noir & Chardonnay

The Home Farm presented the classic overcropping challenge: compacted soils, a nearly extinct soil biome, and vines pushed to their limit for yield rather than quality. The land was physically alive but biologically hollow. Garett rebuilt it from the roots up.

Before
Classic overcropping. Terrible compaction. Almost dead biome. No biodiversity.
After
Vibrant living soil. Diverse cover crops. Thriving biome. All forms of diversity and health.

43 Acres · Old Vines · Acquired 2018

Butlers' Grant came with a different kind of challenge and a different kind of potential: old vines, tired and overcropped, with the deep-rooted capacity for extraordinary complexity. The prescription was careful and often severe: radical crop reduction, vine by vine, calibrated to health and balance rather than output.

The Problem
Tired old vines. Overcropped. Dilute, exhausted fruit. Unrealised potential.
The Solution
Crop loads below Grand Cru levels. Renewed vine energy. Beautiful results in the glass.

Vines — Personally Pruned by Garett and His Team Every Year

"Often seen working in the vineyards by himself, he seems very happy in his solitude."

There is no shortcut to this kind of intimacy with the land. Every cut is a conversation. Every vine is known. This is where world-class terroir begins: not in the cellar, but in the quiet work of steady hands across sixty thousand plants.

Old Vine Wisdom · Butlers' Grant

Giving Old Vines a Second Life

Old vines carry secrets in their wood: decades of memory, deep roots, and the potential for extraordinary concentration. But they require a different kind of listening, and a willingness to be ruthless in service of quality.

At Butlers' Grant, Garett's prescription was deliberate and often severe: a radical reduction in crop loads, calibrated not to a formula, but to the visible vigour and balance of each individual vine. Less fruit per plant. More energy per berry. The results speak directly into the glass.

This is the same site that once produced a Chardonnay served to President Bill Clinton and the Pope on Canadian state visits: a vineyard with deep bones. Under Garett, those bones are producing again, yielding single-vineyard expressions of Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir of remarkable depth.

Beyond the Vineyard

Quiet in the Vines. Rich in His Inner Life.

The same patience and attentiveness Garett brings to the vineyard shows up in everything else he does.

🎸
Musician

Garett's creative life extends well beyond the vine rows. Music is a constant companion, another form of attentive, patient craft.

📚
Avid Reader

A voracious reader with a deep interest in science, history, and current affairs. The same curiosity that drives his viticulture fuels his intellectual life.

🔬
Science of the Soil

His interest in science isn't academic. It's lived. The biology of soil biomes, mycorrhizal networks, and cover crop ecology are daily working tools.

🤫
A Happy Solitude

Often found pruning alone among the vines, sixty thousand of them. He seems, by all accounts, genuinely content in that quiet, purposeful company.
